What you need to know before Moving out

Moving out is a big deal. There’s a lot to think about and a lot to do. One of the most important things on your to-do list should be giving notice to your landlord or rental company that you’ll be vacating your unit at the end of your lease agreement.  

Failing to give proper notice can result in some serious consequences. For starters, you may be responsible for paying rent for the entire duration of your lease, even if you’re not living in the unit. You may also damage your credit score or have difficulty finding a new place to live, as landlords will likely see you as a high-risk tenant. 

The bottom line is this: if you’re planning on moving out at the end of your lease, make sure to give your landlord or rental company at least sixty days’ notice in writing. You may fill up this N9 Form which is the only accepted move-out notice, as this will protect you from some potentially costly consequences down the road. 

Giving Notice 

The first thing you need to do when you’re planning on moving out is give notice to Portsmouth Residential team by completing the N9 form. You’ll need to notify us 60 days prior to the last day of your lease agreement. Once the last day of your fixed term lease passes without notice being given to our team, you automatically become a month-to-month tenant with all the same terms and conditions of your lease, however you no longer have a fixed time period you must stay for.  

Cleaning and Repairs 

Once you’ve given notice, it’s time to start thinking about cleaning and repairs. You’ll want to leave your unit in the same condition as when you moved in, or better if possible. This means cleaning all surfaces, carpeting, floors, and walls; repairing any damage; and ensuring that all appliances are in working order. 

Move-Out Inspection 

Once everything is cleaned and repaired, it’s time for a move-out inspection. This is when a representative from Portsmouth Residential will come by to make sure that everything is in good condition. We’ll also take note of any damages so that it can be deducted from your security deposit (if applicable).  

It’s a huge step to leave your house, but it doesn’t have to be stressful if you plan ahead and prepare a bit. The most important thing on your to-do list should be giving us notice ahead of time.
